Antique Tibetan Singing Bowls: LINGAM

Among the earliest, rarest, and most visually distinctive of all antique Tibetan / Himalayan singing bowls, Lingam bowls are immediately recognized by the raised conical form rising from the center of the interior basin. This central protrusion is often mirrored by a navel-like impression on the underside, revealing the extraordinary skill required to forge, hammer, and raise this form within the body of the bowl. Genuine antique Lingam bowls are exceptionally difficult to find, with some examples possibly dating back to circa 15th–16th century or earlier.

The word Lingam comes from Sanskrit and refers to the phallus, most widely known as the sacred symbol of Shiva in the Hindu tradition. Within the broader spiritual world of the Himalayas, this raised central form may also be understood as a sacred mountain symbol, especially in relation to Mt. Kailash — known in Tibetan as Gang Rinpoche — revered in Buddhist, Bon, Hindu, and Jain traditions.

The hand-engraved rings surrounding the Lingam are not merely decorative. They may suggest the ancient practice of circumambulation: moving prayerfully around a sacred mountain, shrine, temple, or holy center. In this sense, the Lingam bowl can be seen as a three-dimensional mandala or Axis Mundi — a vessel of sound, form, and sacred geography, with the center point representing stillness, origin, and the place where the human and the divine meet.

Antique Lingam bowls are associated with ritual and ceremonial traditions and are often admired for their focused, penetrating, and unusually pure sound. Fine examples may display thick hand-forged construction, deep rim lines, old oxidation, hand-etched circles, and the unmistakable signs of great age and long use. While all genuine antique Lingam bowls are rare, Lingam bowls of true Legendary-quality are far rarer still — and those are the only examples worthy of being offered here.
